Australia Ashes Test squad

Australia has finalized its squad for the first Ashes Test against England, making key changes that reflect both form and fitness.

Selectors dropped young opener Sam Konstas after his underwhelming performance during the West Indies tour. In his place, they brought in uncapped Jake Weatherald, who impressed with three half-centuries in the ongoing Sheffield Shield season. Marnus Labuschagne also earned a recall, having smashed five centuries in domestic cricket to mark a strong return to form.

Chairman of selectors George Bailey confirmed that 14 of the 15 players are currently active in round four of the Sheffield Shield. He highlighted Cameron Green’s return to bowling as a factor that could shape the final playing XI. Despite his recent white-ball success and public backing from coach Andrew McDonald, Mitchell Marsh did not make the cut.

Steve Smith will captain the side in the series opener at Perth on November 21, stepping in for Pat Cummins, who continues to recover from a back injury. Smith’s leadership experience and form make him a natural choice to guide the team in Cummins’s absence.

With a blend of seasoned performers and fresh talent, Australia aims to start the five-match series on a strong note.
