A major train accident in Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh, killed several people and injured several others when a passenger train collided with a stationary freight train on Tuesday evening.

The Korba MEMU passenger train struck a parked goods train near Jairamnagar station under the South East Central Railway (SECR) zone. The impact forced the first coach to mount the freight engine, causing a derailment and triggering panic among passengers.

Rescue teams and railway officials reached the site within minutes. Medical staff administered first aid and shifted critically injured passengers to nearby hospitals. Authorities confirmed six deaths and warned that the toll could rise as operations continue.

Eyewitnesses described the collision as sudden and violent. The force of the crash threw passengers from their seats and trapped several inside mangled compartments. Locals rushed to help, assisting emergency crews in evacuating survivors.

Rail services on the affected route remain suspended. Damage to overhead power lines and signal systems has led to multiple train cancellations and diversions. Officials are working to restore connectivity and remove debris from the tracks.

Investigators have launched a probe to determine the cause of the accident. They are examining whether signaling errors or human negligence contributed to the collision.

This tragic incident has reignited concerns about railway safety and infrastructure oversight. SECR authorities are expected to review existing protocols and introduce corrective measures to prevent similar accidents in the future.
