Kolkata Knight Riders have appointed Abhishek Nayar as their head coach for the IPL 2026 season.
Nayar replaces Chandrakant Pandit, who led KKR from 2023 to 2025 and guided the team to a title win in 2024. However, after a disappointing eighth-place finish in IPL 2025, the franchise decided to part ways with Pandit. Nayar had joined the setup midway through the last season but couldn’t reverse the team’s fortunes.
The 42-year-old brings extensive coaching experience to the role. He served as assistant coach for the Indian national team for a year before his contract ended in April. Nayar has also been part of KKR’s backroom staff from 2018 to 2024, working closely with top players like Rohit Sharma and Shreyas Iyer.
Known for his ability to identify and nurture young talent, Nayar is expected to bring fresh energy and strategic insight to the team. He currently serves as head coach of UP Warriorz in the Women’s Premier League, raising questions about whether he will continue both roles.
As a player, Nayar featured in 60 IPL matches between 2008 and 2014, representing Mumbai Indians, Punjab Kings, Pune Warriors India, and Rajasthan Royals. He also played three ODIs for India in 2009.
KKR’s decision to appoint Nayar signals a shift toward a more development-focused coaching strategy. His familiarity with the franchise and experience in mentoring emerging players could prove vital in the upcoming season.
