Odisha Tree Plantation Policy

The Odisha government has launched a mandatory tree plantation initiative along all newly constructed roads under the Works Department.

This move aims to balance infrastructure growth with environmental protection.

To ensure implementation, the state has allocated 1% of every road construction budget for tree plantation and maintenance. The policy covers national highways, district roads, and other public roads currently under development.

As climate change and pollution continue to pose serious threats, the government has responded with proactive measures. Rapid urbanization and deforestation have worsened environmental conditions, prompting Odisha to integrate afforestation into its infrastructure strategy.

Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision, directed the Works Department to enforce the policy. Officials issued instructions to EIC (Civil & Roads), EIC (NH), and OBCC to begin planting trees along both sides of roads and on dividers wherever feasible.

Additionally, the department released guidelines for monitoring and maintaining the plantations. This green corridor initiative will help reduce air and noise pollution, prevent soil erosion, and improve local climate conditions.

Minister Prithviraj Harichandan highlighted that the Odisha Tree Plantation Policy fulfills the government’s election promise to address climate change through afforestation. By investing in greenery, the state sets a strong example for others to follow.

With this initiative, Odisha strengthens its commitment to sustainable development and environmental stewardship. The policy not only enhances road infrastructure but also contributes to a healthier ecosystem for future generations.
