A fresh wave of panic gripped Ravenshaw University after 16 students from the East Hostel were hospitalized due to suspected food poisoning.

Late Tuesday night, several hostel residents began showing symptoms of vomiting and diarrhea. By Wednesday morning, their condition worsened, prompting fellow students to rush them to SCB Medical College and Hospital. Doctors from the medicine department are currently treating the affected students, and their condition is reported to be stable.

Following the incident, the district health department dispatched a team to investigate the situation on campus. Preliminary findings suggest that contaminated water or stale food may have triggered the outbreak. Officials have not ruled out the possibility of more students falling ill.

This is not the first such incident at Ravenshaw. In July, 85 students from New PG and Dharmapada hostels were similarly affected after consuming spoiled fish curry. That episode led to a thorough inspection of hostel kitchens and sanitation facilities. Authorities had then instructed vendors to follow strict SOPs while supplying food.

In the current case, officials are again examining the kitchen, water sources, and food supply chain. The health department is working closely with university staff to prevent further spread and ensure safety.

The sudden spike in cases from a single hostel has raised concerns about hygiene standards and food safety on campus. Students and parents are urging the administration to take swift corrective measures.
