The festival of Dhanteras, also known as Dhantrayodashi or Dhanvantari Jayanti, marks the beginning of the Diwali celebrations. This year, it will be observed on Saturday, October 18. The day is dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Dhanvantari, symbolising wealth, health, and prosperity.

Lighting diyas on this day is one of the most cherished traditions in Hindu households. Each diya represents light, purity, and protection from negative energies. Lighting 13 diyas on Dhanteras is believed to attract prosperity, positivity, and good fortune into the home.

Why Light 13 Diyas on Dhanteras?

The number 13 is considered auspicious in Hindu tradition. Lighting 13 diyas symbolises:

  • Inviting Goddess Lakshmi’s blessings for financial growth.

  • Seeking Lord Dhanvantari’s protection for good health.

  • Dispelling darkness and negativity.

  • Strengthening harmony and peace within the household.

Each diya has a unique significance and placement, believed to attract specific blessings.

Where to Place the 13 Diyas on Dhanteras

  1. Near the Dustbin (South direction): Protects the family from untimely death and invites longevity.

  2. In Front of the Home Temple: Lit with ghee, it attracts divine blessings and good fortune.

  3. Before Goddess Lakshmi’s Idol: Invokes prosperity, abundance, and success.

  4. Near the Tulsi Plant (Holy Basil): Brings harmony, peace, and happiness to the home.

  5. At the Main Entrance: Keeps evil spirits away and welcomes joy and positivity.

  6. Under a Peepal Tree: Traditionally lit with mustard oil to aid recovery from illness or financial stress.

  7. In a Nearby Temple: Offers respect to deities and promotes spiritual wellbeing.

  8. Near the Waste Disposal Area: Wards off negativity and cleanses the environment.

  9. Outside the Washroom: Balances household energy and promotes prosperity.

  10. On the Rooftop: Shields the home from negative influences.

  11. On a Window Ledge: Spreads brightness and drives away darkness.

  12. On the Top Floor or Balcony: Enhances health and happiness.

  13. At the Home Entrance or Courtyard: Symbolises the final welcoming of positivity and fortune.

Safety Tip

Always keep diyas on a stable surface and away from curtains or flammable items. Never leave them unattended. Prioritise safety while keeping the festive spirit alive.

Dhanteras 2025: A Festival of Light and Renewal

Dhanteras celebrates light over darkness, wealth over want, and health over hardship. Lighting 13 diyas is not just a ritual—it’s a symbol of hope and new beginnings. Let this Dhanteras bring light, love, and abundance to every home.
