A team from the Odisha State Women’s Commission (OSCW) will visit Durgapur in West Bengal to assist the Odia MBBS student who was allegedly gang-raped near a private medical college in Paschim Bardhaman district, officials confirmed on Sunday.
Commission Takes Action
Commission Chairperson Sobhana Mohanty described the incident as “extremely barbaric” and said the team would investigate the matter and extend all possible support to the survivor and her family.
“The survivor’s family is in touch with us. I am personally ensuring that proper assistance is provided. No one is above the law — those responsible will be punished,” Mohanty said.
She also revealed that efforts to contact the West Bengal Women’s Commission had been unsuccessful so far, alleging a lack of cooperation from their counterparts in the neighbouring state.
District Administration Extends Support
A separate Balasore district administration team, led by the Additional District Magistrate (ADM), has already been sent to Durgapur.
The team includes District Social Welfare Officer (DSWO) Jyotsna Mohanty and will coordinate with local police and hospital authorities to ensure that medical, legal, and logistical assistance is provided promptly.
DSWO Mohanty stated that the survivor, a native of Balasore district, is showing signs of gradual improvement.
“We are maintaining coordination with the West Bengal Police. The Odisha government is committed to providing every possible form of support to the survivor and her family,” she added.
Chief Minister Extends Support
Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has personally spoken to the survivor’s father, assuring the family of full government support.
The CM said that a senior official has been designated to liaise with West Bengal authorities and ensure continuous medical, legal, and emotional assistance for the survivor.
He also stressed that the accused must face the strictest punishment under law and assured additional aid if required.
Investigation Update
According to police sources, three accused have been arrested within 36 hours of the incident, while two others remain absconding.
