‘Look, There Was No Single’: Dinesh Karthik Predicts Shubman Gill’s Dressing Room Talk With Yashasvi Jaiswal After Costly Run-Out

Former India wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik shared a humorous yet insightful take on what might have transpired between Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal in the Indian dressing room after their unfortunate mix-up led to Jaiswal’s dismissal for 175 on Day 2 of the India vs West Indies Test at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.

The moment — a run-out born from miscommunication — drew widespread attention from fans, pundits, and commentators alike. Jaiswal, on the brink of a potential double century, pushed a full-length delivery from Jayden Seales towards mid-off and instinctively called for a single. Gill, however, didn’t respond, leaving Jaiswal stranded mid-pitch as Tagenarine Chanderpaul’s quick throw reached wicketkeeper Tevin Imlach, who removed the bails with precision.

Karthik, who was part of the commentary panel, imagined the conversation that might follow in the dressing room:

“I think Shubman Gill would walk straight to Yashasvi Jaiswal and say, ‘Look, there have been many balls that we hit hard to mid-off, but we didn’t run. I wasn’t expecting you to run this time. Even though it was your call, I didn’t feel there was a single.’ But Yashasvi was too far to pull back,” Karthik said.

As Jaiswal walked off visibly upset, cameras caught him gesturing toward Gill, saying “Mera call hai” (“It was my call”), expressing his frustration at the communication breakdown. Gill, meanwhile, stood still, offering little reaction.

Replays suggested the dismissal was tighter than it appeared in real-time, leading some to question why the on-field decision wasn’t referred to the third umpire. The Delhi crowd applauded Jaiswal’s exceptional innings — 175 runs off 258 balls with 22 boundaries — even as they lamented the missed milestone.

Inside the dressing room, vice-captain Ravindra Jadeja was seen speaking to Jaiswal, likely consoling the young opener. Former India coach Anil Kumble, commentating on the match, remarked that Jaiswal was “well on course for a triple century.”

The incident, while unfortunate, also poses an early leadership challenge for India’s new Test captain Shubman Gill, who must balance assertiveness with empathy in handling one of the team’s brightest young stars.
