In a nail-biting encounter at the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, Australia’s match against Afghanistan was abruptly halted by rain, allowing the Aussies to advance to the semifinals.

Afghanistan posted a competitive total of 273 all out, with Sediqullah Atal leading the way with a solid 85 runs. Spencer Johnson was pivotal in Afghanistan’s collapse, taking crucial early wickets and wrapping up their innings with a series of significant dismissals.

Despite moments of resistance from the Afghan batting lineup, including Azmatullah Omarzai’s impressive 67, the team fell short of their potential.

In response, Australia had reached 109/1 in 13 overs when the rain gods intervened. Travis Head was the standout performer, remaining unbeaten on 59, while Steve Smith was not out on 19.

The abandonment of the match due to inclement weather secured Australia’s place in the semi-finals.

Key Highlights:

  • Afghanistan’s Sediqullah Atal scored 85 runs.
  • Australia’s Spencer Johnson played a crucial role by dismissing key Afghan players.
  • Australia was at 109/1 in the 13th over when the rain stopped play.
  • The match abandonment ensured Australia’s progression to the semi-finals.
  • Afghanistan had earlier defeated England to keep their hopes alive.

Australia now sits atop Group B with South Africa, both having three points each, while England has been eliminated from the tournament.
