Seasoned Indian boxer Pooja Rani has punched her way into the semifinals of the Women’s World Boxing Championships 2025, guaranteeing herself and India a podium finish in the 80kg category.

The 34-year-old, who received a first-round bye, defeated Poland’s teenage sensation Emilia Koterska in a tense 3-2 split decision late Wednesday night.

The bout saw Pooja rely on her experience and composure, especially in the second round where she landed powerful hooks to gain the upper hand. Despite a sluggish start and a scrappy final round, her sharp backhands sealed the victory.

This marks Pooja’s maiden medal at the World Championships and adds to India’s growing tally, with Jaismine Lamboria (57kg) and Nupur Sheoran (80+kg) also securing semifinal berths.

Meanwhile, India’s men’s campaign suffered a setback as Abhinash Jamwal bowed out in the 65kg quarterfinals, losing 1-4 to Olympic bronze medallist Lasha Guruli of Georgia. Only Jadumani Singh (50kg) remains in contention, set to face reigning world champion Sanzhar Tashkenbay of Kazakhstan.

India had won four gold medals in the previous edition hosted at home, but this year’s performance reflects a shift in momentum, especially on the men’s side.

Pooja will now face local favorite Emily Asquith in the semifinals, with hopes high for a historic finish.
