Nepal social media ban lifted

The Nepal government has officially lifted its controversial ban on 26 social media platforms, including Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, and YouTube, after days of violent protests led by youth groups.

The demonstrations, sparked by the ban and allegations of government corruption, resulted in 19 deaths and over 300 injuries across the country.

Minister for Communication, Information and Broadcasting Prithvi Subba Gurung announced the reversal following an emergency Cabinet meeting. The Ministry of Information has instructed agencies to restore access to the platforms immediately, responding to demands from the ‘Gen Z’ movement that organized mass protests outside Parliament.

The unrest escalated when protesters breached the Parliament complex, prompting police to use water cannons, tear gas, and live ammunition to disperse crowds. Social media services resumed on Monday night, bringing relief to millions of users.

International bodies, including the United Nations, have expressed concern over the use of force and urged restraint from all parties involved.
