The sacred Mahadeepa (holy lamp) was lifted atop the Lingaraj Temple on Wednesday, marking the climax of the Maha Shivaratri festival. Devotees filled the air with chants of “Har Har Mahadev” and “Om Namah Shivaya” as they watched this significant ritual unfold.

Scheduled to be lifted at 10 PM, the Mahadeepa was delayed by approximately 40 minutes, finally being hoisted at 10:40 PM. Despite the delay, thousands of devotees gathered around the historic temple, breaking their day-long fast in reverence and celebration after the lamp’s ascension.

Maha Shivaratri is a major Hindu festival that celebrates the divine union of Shiva and Shakti. The lifting of the Mahadeepa symbolizes the lighting of the world with knowledge and divinity. The Lingaraj Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, is one of the most revered sites for this occasion.

This year’s celebration saw a large turnout of devotees, who participated in various rituals, including Sahanamela and Chariprahara, in the temple premises. The atmosphere was electric with spiritual fervor as the devotees chanted and performed rituals throughout the night.

The event concluded with the lifting of the Mahadeepa, bringing the Maha Shivaratri celebrations to a close in Bhubaneswar. For many, it was a moment of spiritual fulfillment and a testament to their unwavering devotion.
