Authorities have opened 12 gates of Hirakud Dam in Odisha to discharge excess floodwater following heavy rainfall in the Mahanadi River catchment.
The dam, located in Odisha, is currently receiving 2,13,627 cusecs of water while releasing 2,24,670 cusecs downstream.
Eight gates on the left bank and four on the right bank have been opened to manage the rising water level, which now stands at 621.69 feet. Officials are closely monitoring the situation and expect the release to continue until the reservoir stabilizes.
The move comes as part of a broader flood management strategy to protect surrounding areas from potential inundation. Local residents have been advised to stay alert, especially those living downstream.
