Washington: NASA astronaut Sunita Williams, stationed on the International Space Station (ISS), extended heartfelt Diwali greetings to celebrants across the US and globally.
From space, Williams shared a special video message, reflecting on the unique experience of celebrating Diwali 260 miles above Earth. Beginning with “Greetings from the ISS,” she conveyed her warmest wishes for a joyful Diwali, especially to those at the White House.
Her message was highlighted during the White House Diwali celebrations, where she acknowledged President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris for their support of the festivities and the Indian-American community. Williams expressed thanks, saying, “Thank you to the President and Vice President for celebrating with our community and recognizing the contributions we make.”
She also reflected on her family’s dedication to cultural traditions, discussing her father’s influence in teaching her about Diwali and other significant Indian festivals, a legacy she proudly upholds from space.
Williams underscored the hopeful message of Diwali: “Diwali is a celebration of joy, as goodness prevails.” Her message, mirroring the festival’s themes of light and renewal, struck a chord with people on Earth.
Presently on the ISS, Williams has been in orbit since June 6, 2023, after launching with astronaut Butch Wilmore aboard Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft. Initially planned for a short mission, their stay was prolonged when NASA deemed an early return “too risky.” They are now slated to return in February 2025.
