In a thrilling final at the Canadian Open, 22-year-old Ben Shelton defeated Russia’s Karen Khachanov 6-7(5), 6-4, 7-6(3), marking a historic milestone as the youngest American in two decades to win a Masters 1000 title.
The victory propelled Shelton to a career-high ATP ranking of World No. 6, overtaking tennis legend Novak Djokovic.
Shelton’s ascent reflects a new wave of American talent in men’s tennis, with Taylor Fritz also holding strong at No. 4. Djokovic, who has been inactive since his Wimbledon semifinal loss to Jannik Sinner, dropped to seventh.
Khachanov, despite the loss, climbed four spots to No. 12—his highest since August 2023—after a strong run that included a win over World No. 3 Alexander Zverev. Meanwhile, Australian Alexei Popyrin broke into the Top 20 for the first time, now ranked 19th.
The updated ATP Top 10 includes:
- 🇮🇹 Jannik Sinner – 12,030 pts
- 🇪🇸 Carlos Alcaraz – 8,590 pts
