Odisha flood road repair order

In a swift response to widespread damage caused by recent heavy rainfall and flooding, the Odisha Department of Rural Development has directed officials to prioritise urgent repairs across the state.

Commissioner-cum-Secretary Yamini Sarangi, IAS, issued the order on 31 July 2026 to the Engineer-in-Chiefs of Rural Works (EIC-I and EIC-II) in Bhubaneswar. The letter notes that multiple Rural Works Divisions have reported damage and breaches to roads, bridges, culverts and cross-drainage (CD) works. These disruptions have led to traffic interruptions and significant inconvenience for the public.

The directive instructs all concerned officers to take immediate steps for repair and restoration under their jurisdiction, strictly following prescribed codal provisions, so that normal traffic movement can resume as quickly as possible.

Officials have also been told to closely monitor vulnerable areas and implement both preventive and restorative measures without compromising on safety or quality. At damaged sites, adequate cautionary steps—including barricading, warning signs and traffic diversion arrangements—must be put in place until normalcy is restored.

Additionally, a detailed report covering the nature and extent of the damage, restoration works undertaken, and geo-tagged photographs must be submitted to the department for further action.

The move comes amid ongoing challenges from monsoon rains that have affected connectivity in several rural parts of Odisha. By prioritising these repairs, the government aims to restore essential rural infrastructure and minimise hardship for residents.
