Bhadrak: Police on Wednesday arrested two youths near Ranital square here on NH-16 and seized brown sugar worth over Rs 30 lakh. However, another accused managed to evade arrest.
The arrested persons are identified as Srikant Das and Sanjay Mallik of Bansada and Tihidi police station areas. They have been forwarded to court, the police said.
Another accused involved in the smuggling of the contraband managed to give a slip. He is identified as Tapan Mallik. One motorcycle and two mobile phones along with 310 grams of brown sugar has been seized during the raid, the police added
According to reports, the contraband consignment was intercepted at Ranital square while it was being smuggled to Bhadrak from Balasore district.
Bhadrak SP Charan Singh Meena told reporters that Ranital square area has become a paradise for brown sugar smugglers and peddlers. Other contrabands like cannabis are also being smuggled into the area from other regions of the state, he added.
The SP said that the district police have stepped up patrolling on the highways and other regions to nab the criminals.
