Russia has strongly criticised US President Donald Trump’s warning to India over its purchase of Russian oil, calling such threats “illegal”.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said on Tuesday that sovereign nations have the right to choose their own trade partners and forms of economic cooperation. “We hear many statements that are in fact threats… We do not consider such statements to be legal,” Peskov told reporters.

Trump recently warned that tariffs on Indian goods would be “substantially” increased if New Delhi continued buying Russian oil and defence products. He accused India of reselling Russian crude for “big profits” while ignoring the war in Ukraine.

India hit back, calling the targeting “unjustified and unreasonable” and vowed to take “all necessary measures” to safeguard its interests.

The US has already imposed a 25% tariff on Indian goods starting August 1, citing India’s high tariffs on American products.

She went there, and when they were clicking, she said ‘mujhe sharam aa rahi hai’, and I think it was the most honest thing to be, rather than pretend to be what you are not.”
