Kendrapara: Bhitarkanika National Park is scheduled to reopen to visitors on August 1 (Thursday) after a three-month closure.
The park was closed from May 1 to July 31 due to the breeding season of saltwater crocodiles, Assistant Conservator of Forests (ACF) Manas Das explained.
“The crocodiles become more aggressive during this time, so we imposed a three-month ban for the safety of tourists and locals, ensuring a peaceful environment for the reptiles’ mating and nesting,” he stated, noting that this year approximately 114 crocodiles have nested.
Das also mentioned that the Forest Department has constructed a 600-meter-long wooden canopy walkway, elevated 15 meters above the ground, for Rs 40 lakh, allowing visitors an intimate view of the forest and its wildlife. Additionally, the watchtower and hunting tower have been refurbished.
Das advised that those planning to visit Bhitarkanika should book online. The park offers accommodations in Dangamala, Habalikothi, and Gupti, which are popular among tourists from India and overseas.
He also noted that several private tour and travel operators are planning to set up tents for tourists near Bhitarkanika.
