Nayagarh: In a land dispute that escalated into violence, one person died and two others were critically injured in an attack by a sharp weapon on Sunday in Bhutadi village of Itamati police station in Nayagarh district.
The victims are identified as the deceased Dandapani Parida (40), his injured father Jayadev Parida (70) and his younger brother Pramod Parida (35).
According to reports, there was a long-standing land dispute between Jayadev and Jagu Raut, both belonging to Bhutadi village of Itamati police station. With the help of the villagers, Monday was fixed as the day for settlement. However, on Sunday while Jayadev with his two sons Dandapani and Pramod were working in the sugarcane field near his farm, Jagu Raut and Kabu Raut with some other persons suddenly attacked the father-son trio using machette.
First, the father Jayadev was struck on the back and fell to the ground. Seeing this Pramod and Dandapani, rushed to Jayadev’s help and they too were attacked. In the attack, Dandapani died on the spot and Pramod’s hand got hacked.
As the villagers came to the scene the assailants fled the scene. Jayadev and Pramod were taken to the district main hospital while Itamati police reached the spot and sent the deceased’s body for autopsy.
Later, Jayadev and Pramod have been shifted to a hospital in Bhubaneswar as their condition is critical. The area is in chaos due to the incident. A large force has been deployed by the Itamati police.
