The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has appointed Professor Uma Kanjilal as its Vice Chancellor, becoming the first woman to hold the position since the university’s inception in 1985.
Kanjilal, a leading voice in digital education, steps into the role after serving as acting VC since July 2024. Her appointment reflects IGNOU’s vision to expand its technological and inclusive footprint in open and distance learning (ODL).
With over 36 years in academia, she has helmed key initiatives including SWAYAM and SWAYAM PRABHA, India’s flagship digital learning platforms. Her leadership extends to projects like the National Virtual Library of India and NMEICT Phase-III, reinforcing her commitment to bridging educational gaps through tech-enabled learning.
A Fulbright Fellow and recipient of prestigious awards, including the Manthan Award for e-Education, Kanjilal’s global collaborations with organisations such as the Commonwealth of Learning have amplified her impact in flexible education worldwide.
Her appointment sets a progressive precedent for gender representation and digital innovation within India’s higher education landscape.
