In a swift disciplinary move, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has suspended Sudipta Swain, the Angul district Secretary and former youth wing president, following his arrest by Bantala police over grave allegations of harassment and intimidation of a young woman.

Acting on the directive of State BJP President Manmohan Samal, the party’s disciplinary committee took action against Swain for engaging in conduct deemed disruptive and contrary to party discipline. State convenor of the disciplinary committee, Sudarshan Nayak, confirmed the suspension, citing Swain’s behaviour as a violation of organisational norms.

According to police sources, the woman from Bantala had lodged a complaint accusing Swain of prolonged mental and physical harassment. The FIR details instances of verbal abuse, threats to her and her family, and repeated intimidation involving weapons. The victim also alleged that Swain harassed her during her daily commute and created fear by brandishing weapons outside her residence.

Swain was taken into custody and produced before the local court. The incident has sparked widespread concern in the community, raising questions about the misuse of political influence and the safety of women in public spaces.

The BJP’s prompt disciplinary response is seen as an effort to uphold internal accountability and distance the party from individuals facing serious criminal charges.
