Ravenshaw University has withdrawn its controversial order that barred female faculty, staff, and students from remaining on campus after 5:30 PM.

The directive issued on July 17, citing safety concerns, sparked widespread criticism for its gender-specific nature.

The now-rescinded notice, signed by the Registrar on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, stated that the restriction would remain in place until a formal Standard Operating Procedure (SoP) was issued to regulate work hours and safety protocols. The order read:

“No female faculty, staff, and students are permitted to remain in the workplace or on campus after 5.30 pm.”

Following backlash from students, faculty, and civil society groups, the university revoked the order on July 18. Sources within the administration confirmed that a comprehensive safety guideline is being drafted, which will apply to all members of the university community, regardless of gender.

The move has reignited conversations around gendered safety norms and institutional responsibility. While some welcomed the university’s responsiveness, others called for deeper reforms to ensure equitable and secure access to campus facilities.

As Ravenshaw University works toward a more inclusive policy framework, stakeholders await clarity on the forthcoming SoP and its implications for campus life.
