Odisha’s political landscape is witnessing heightened tensions as the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) faces mounting pressure from opposition parties, Congress and Biju Janata Dal (BJD), over a series of sensitive issues.
Since forming the government in June 2024, the BJP has navigated three legislative sessions, managing to fend off opposition challenges. However, political analysts predict that the upcoming monsoon session of the Odisha Legislative Assembly will pose a significant test for the ruling party.
The opposition has seized on recent incidents to corner the government, with Congress leading an aggressive campaign on issues like law and order, women’s safety, and alleged governance failures. High-profile cases, including the Gopalpur gangrape, the Saradhabali stampede deaths, and the suicide of FM University student Soumyashree Bisi, have fueled public outrage and given the opposition potent ammunition.
Congress leaders, including Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi, have sharply criticised the BJP, with the national Congress women’s wing chief Alka Lamba actively engaging with state leaders on the Saumyashree case. The party has been vocal on the streets and in the Assembly, with all 14 of its MLAs suspended in the last session for their protests over women’s safety.
Meanwhile, the BJD, the main opposition party, has not lagged. It recently staged a protest at Lok Seva Bhawan over the Soumyashree suicide case, signalling its intent to keep the pressure on. The BJD is expected to raise these issues, alongside others like recruitment exam irregularities and the lack of public reports on incidents like the Chikiti hooch deaths, the Bharatpur police station assault case, in the upcoming session.
Other unresolved controversies, such as the assault on an additional BMC commissioner and the Lord Balabhadra idol mishap, have further emboldened the opposition. Political observers note that the BJP’s handling of these issues will be critical, as public discontent grows.
Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi faces the daunting task of managing the fallout while maintaining his party’s image. On Wednesday, high-level meetings were held at Lok Seva Bhawan, the BJP office, and the Chief Minister’s residence to strategise on addressing the Soumyashree case and other challenges, though no official statements have been released.
With Congress and BJD gearing up for a stormy monsoon session, analysts predict a fierce showdown in the Assembly, with women’s safety and governance lapses likely to dominate the discourse. The BJP will need to tread carefully to maintain its grip on Odisha’s volatile political terrain.
