Prime Minister Narendra Modi was conferred with Brazil’s highest civilian award, the Grand Collar of the National Order of the Southern Cross, by President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva on Tuesday.

The honour recognises Modi’s pivotal role in strengthening India-Brazil relations and deepening cooperation between the two nations across key global platforms.

During a joint press statement following delegation-level talks, Prime Minister Modi expressed his heartfelt gratitude, calling the moment one of immense pride—not just for himself, but for all 140 crore Indians. “I express my heartfelt gratitude to President Lula, the Brazilian government, and the people of Brazil,” he stated.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs, President Lula—widely regarded as the architect of the India-Brazil Strategic Partnership—acknowledged Modi’s contributions to elevating bilateral ties. The Prime Minister added that the recognition would further inspire both nations to strengthen their longstanding friendship.

In a social media post later, Modi remarked that the award symbolises the deep affection the people of Brazil hold for India, and expressed optimism that the relationship would continue to scale new heights.

This is the 26th international honour Prime Minister Modi has received from a foreign government since assuming office in May 2014.
