The political corridors of Odisha are abuzz with speculation as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government prepares for a significant cabinet expansion. A series of high-profile meetings, including a one-hour discussion between Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and Governor Dr Hari Babu Kambhampati on Monday, has fueled anticipation. The visit of BJP State President Manmohan Samal and Organisation General Secretary Manas Mohanty to Delhi, coupled with Revenue Minister Suresh Pujari’s meeting with the Governor on Tuesday, has further amplified discussions about the impending reshuffle.

Sources within the BJP indicate that Samal and Mohanty are in Delhi to hold talks with central leadership and senior Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) figures. The agenda includes finalising the cabinet expansion and appointments to various boards and corporations. Chief Minister Majhi is also expected to visit Delhi soon to seal these decisions. The expansion is likely to focus on inducting fresh faces, particularly youth and women representatives, while ensuring regional and community balance. Districts such as Kendrapara, Cuttack, Sundargarh, Bargarh, Balasore, Kalahandi, and Kandhamal are being considered for representation.

The cabinet reshuffle may also involve reassigning portfolios, with some departments potentially being taken away from underperforming ministers and given to new appointees. Reports suggest that Majhi is dissatisfied with the performance of certain ministers, prompting this strategic overhaul. By the end of July, the expanded cabinet is expected to take the oath, alongside announcements for board and corporation appointments.

Revenue Minister Suresh Pujari’s meeting with Governor Kambhampati at Raj Bhavan on Tuesday evening was initially planned as a visit by the Governor to Pujari’s residence. However, due to personal reasons, Pujari met the Governor at Raj Bhavan instead. Sources indicate that more ministers may meet the Governor in the coming days, adding to the political intrigue.

The cabinet expansion has sparked excitement and anxiety among BJP MLAs, with many aspiring for ministerial berths. Bhanjanagar MLA Pradyumna Nayak emphasised the party’s disciplined approach, stating, “BJP is a structured party, not driven by lobbying like others. It’s natural to aspire for a ministerial role, especially after working at the grassroots and defeating prominent leaders.” Nayak highlighted Ganjam’s significance, with its 11 BJP MLAs, and expressed hope for greater representation from the district.

As discussions gain momentum, the cabinet expansion is poised to bring fresh dynamism to Odisha’s political landscape, balancing experience with new energy while addressing regional aspirations.
