Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during a 35-minute phone call with former US President Donald Trump, firmly dismissed Washington’s repeated claims of brokering a ceasefire between India and Pakistan.

Modi clarified that the military de-escalation in May was a bilateral decision, coordinated through army channels, and not mediated by any third party.

The conversation, held after a missed meeting on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Canada, was initiated at Trump’s request, according to Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri.

Key Takeaways from the Modi-Trump Call:

  • No US Mediation: Modi asserted that India “has never accepted, does not accept, and will never accept mediation,” especially in matters concerning national security or Pakistan.

  • Operation Sindoor Continues: The PM confirmed that Operation Sindoor, launched after the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 civilians, is still active. The operation targeted terror infrastructure in Pakistan and PoK.

  • India’s Response: Modi reiterated that India will answer Pakistan’s bullets with bombs and described India’s response on May 9–10 as “measured, precise, and non-escalatory,” yet highly effective — damaging key Pakistani airbases and military assets.

  • Pakistan Requested Halt: The PM stated it was Pakistan that requested India to halt military actions, and the decision was made through the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs) of both sides.

  • No Discussion on Trade or Mediation: Modi emphasized that during the entire four-day conflict, there was no discussion on any India-US trade deal or US role in diplomacy.

Modi and Trump also discussed:

  • The Israel-Iran tensions and Russia-Ukraine war, both agreeing on the need for direct dialogue between conflicting nations.

  • Quad Cooperation in the Indo-Pacific, with Modi extending an invitation to Trump for the next Quad Summit in India, which Trump accepted.

Trump had publicly claimed credit for stopping the May hostilities between India and Pakistan, stating he used trade threats as leverage. Modi’s detailed response now firmly rebuts those assertions, marking the first public statement by the PM on this sensitive issue.
