Odisha has reported seven new COVID-19 positive cases, bringing the total number of infections in the state to 56, according to the Public Health Director, Nilakantha Mishra. Of these, 20 individuals have fully recovered, leaving 36 active cases under medical supervision.

Health officials have emphasised that the situation remains stable and not alarming, with the new strain showing low transmissibility and severity.

Dr. Amarendranath Mohanty, Director of Health Services, reassured the public that the current COVID-19 scenario in Odisha is under control. “The new strain, identified as a sub-variant of Omicron in August 2023, is not highly dangerous. It causes mild symptoms such as fever, cough, and cold, with minimal severity in most cases,” Dr. Mohanty stated. However, he cautioned that elderly individuals and those with comorbidities remain at risk and should strictly adhere to COVID-19 guidelines.

The Union Health Ministry has issued directives to all states, including Odisha, to ensure adequate healthcare infrastructure, including oxygen cylinders, medical beds, ventilators, and essential medicines, to handle any potential surge. General preventive measures such as hand sanitisation, wearing masks during coughing or sneezing, and avoiding crowded places have been reiterated. Individuals experiencing respiratory issues or flu-like symptoms are advised to seek immediate medical consultation and avoid public gatherings.

With the annual Rath Yatra festival approaching, Dr. Mohanty clarified that no specific restrictions have been imposed so far, but attendees are urged to exercise caution. “We are monitoring the situation closely. There’s no need for panic, but following basic precautions is essential to ensure everyone’s safety,” he added.

Health experts have noted that the current strain, a sub-variant of Omicron, is not as lethal as previous variants. However, vulnerable groups, including the elderly and those with multiple health conditions, are advised to remain vigilant.

The Union Health Ministry has also warned against believing rumours and emphasised the importance of maintaining a robust medical infrastructure to tackle any unforeseen challenges.

Odisha’s health department continues to urge residents to follow COVID-19 protocols, particularly in light of large-scale events like Rath Yatra. The state has been proactive in maintaining sufficient oxygen supplies and medical resources to ensure preparedness.
