A heartbreaking case of alleged dowry torture has emerged from Odisha’s Keonjhar district. Rashmita, a young woman from Bhadrak, died after reportedly being forced to consume poison by her in-laws.
Her grieving family staged a protest outside the Ghasipura police station, demanding justice and strict action against the accused.
According to reports, Rashmita married Shivananda from Jhadukundi village in 2020. While things appeared normal at first, her father, Rabindra Panda, claimed the in-laws began demanding more dowry soon after and subjected her to mental and physical abuse, including from the husband’s sister and brother-in-law.
On June 3, Rashmita was admitted to Anandapur hospital in critical condition, later shifted to SCB Medical College, Cuttack, where she succumbed to her injuries after two days.
The family alleges she was murdered under the guise of suicide, claiming she was forced to ingest poison. No official comment has been released by the police or the accused in-laws yet.
A police investigation is underway.
