In a major counter-espionage breakthrough, Punjab Police on Tuesday arrested Gagandeep Singh, a resident of Tarn Taran, for allegedly spying for Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and leaking critical details of Indian Army movements during Operation Sindoor.

According to DGP Gaurav Yadav, Gagandeep Singh had been in active contact for over five years with Gopal Singh Chawla, a Pakistan-based pro-Khalistan leader, through whom he was introduced to Pakistani Intelligence Operatives (PIOs). Chawla is a well-known figure for his anti-India activities and links to terror groups.

Singh allegedly shared classified details, including troop deployments and strategic locations, during Operation Sindoor—a retaliatory military strike launched by India on May 7 targeting nine terror sites in Pakistan and PoK after the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, which killed 26 people.

Police also recovered a mobile phone containing incriminating intelligence and contact details of over 20 ISI operatives. According to sources, Singh also received payments via Indian financial channels for his espionage services.

“The accused posed a serious threat to national security by leaking sensitive information during a critical operation,” said DGP Yadav, adding that Singh has been booked under the Official Secrets Act.

Under Operation Sindoor, the Indian Armed Forces carried out pre-dawn precision missile strikes on key terror hubs such as:

  • Jaish-e-Mohammad’s base in Bahawalpur

  • Lashkar-e-Taiba’s facility in Muridke

The mission was in retaliation for the Pahalgam massacre, marking one of India’s most direct and bold cross-border strikes since Balakot in 2019.

This arrest follows a string of recent espionage-related arrests, including a woman from Malerkotla. Police have launched a full-spectrum financial and technical probe to unravel the extent of this ISI-Khalistan-backed spy network.

“We remain unwavering in our commitment to protect the sovereignty and integrity of India,” DGP Yadav affirmed.

This development adds urgency to India’s internal security challenges, especially amid ongoing threats from cross-border terror outfits and their proxies within.
