The Odisha Vigilance Department has unearthed a staggering amount of cash, properties, and financial assets during an extensive raid on the properties linked to Baikuntha Nath Sarangi, Chief Engineer of the Plan Roads, RW Department, Odisha.
During the ongoing searches, officials have discovered Rs. 2.51 crores in cash, along with two multi-storeyed buildings, two flats, and seven high-value plots across Bhubaneswar, Angul, and Puri. Additionally, the vigilance team has identified investments in the share market worth Rs. 2.7 crores, bank and insurance deposits amounting to Rs. 1.5 crores, and a Maruti Swift ZXI four-wheeler.
The raids, which began earlier this week, have revealed alleged disproportionate assets in the name of Sarangi and his family members, prompting further scrutiny by authorities. A locker maintained at Axis Bank, Angul, is yet to be opened, hinting at the possibility of additional discoveries.
Vigilance Technical Wing officials are currently assessing the valuation of unearthed properties, while searches remain ongoing. With each new revelation, the scale of the alleged financial misappropriation continues to widen, sparking intense public and legal discussions.
The following assets have been unearthed in the name of Sri Sarangi and his family members:
- One double-storeyed residential building at Karadagadia, Angul.
- Another double-storeyed building at Matiasahi, Angul.
- Flat vide No. C-102 with area 1530 Sqft. in PDN Exotica in Dumduma, Bhubaneswar.
- Another flat at Siula with an area 1100 Sqft. PS-Pipili, Dist-Puri.
- 7 nos. of plots on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar &Angul. Details as under:
- i) A piece of land vide plot No.1871, Khata No.60 with area Ac.0.09 dcml. at Karadagadia, Angul.
- ii) A piece of land vide plot No.1892, Khata No.244 with area Ac.0.08 dcml. at Karadagadia, Angul.
iii) A piece of land vide plot No.190, Khata No.16 with area Ac.0.32 dcml. at Mali sahi, Angul.
- iv) A piece of land vide plot No.485, Khata No.556 with area Ac.0.03 dcml. at Siula, Pipili, Puri.
- v) A piece of land vide plot No.482, Khata No.782/559 with area Ac.0.28 dcml. at Siula, Pipili, Puri.
- vi) A piece of land vide plot No.484, Khata No.782/708 with area Ac.0.05 dcml. at Siula, Pipili, Puri.
vii) A piece of land vide plot No.483, Khata No.782/39 with area Ac.0.545 dcml. at Siula, Pipili, Puri.
The measurement and valuation/assessment of the above buildings/flats/ plots are being carried out by the Vigilance Technical Wing.
- Cash Rs. 2.51 Crore (Rs. 1.30 Crore unearthed from residential house at Angul& Rs. 1.21 Crore from flat at Bhubaneswar).
- Investment in the share market approx. Rs. 2.70 Crore.
- Bank and Insurance deposits Rs 1. .5 Crore.
- One locker being maintained at Axis Bank, Angul, in the name of his wife is still to be opened.
- 1 four-wheeler (Maruti Swift ZXI).
Service Details of Sarangi:
He began his government service as a Stipendiary Engineer in Kaniha Block under the Panchayati Raj Department, earning a consolidated pay of Rs. 2,000 per month.
He then served as a Stipendiary Engineer in various blocks across the state of Odisha until July 1999. On October 15, 1999, he was regularised as an Assistant Engineer and was assigned to the PWD Division in Sundargarh, where he worked in different PWD Divisions and the RD Sub-Division in Talcher until 2012.
In 2014, he was promoted to the position of Assistant Executive Engineer and posted to the RD Sub-Division in Athamallik. In October 2016, he was promoted to Executive Engineer and assigned to the RD Division in Deogarh.
By January 2023, he was promoted to Additional Chief Engineer, and since February 2025, he has been serving as the Chief Engineer for Plan Roads in the RW Department, Odisha, located in Bhubaneswar.
