In a major crackdown on corruption, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested two individuals—a Deputy Registrar of the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT), Mumbai Bench, and a private individual—for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs.3 lakh.

The case originates from a dispute over a hotel’s ownership, which has been pending in the Mumbai NCLT Court Number IV since 2020.

According to reports, the arrested Deputy Registrar, Charan Pratap Singh, allegedly demanded Rs.3.5 lakh from the complainant, promising to influence the case in his favour using his contacts within the tribunal. He later agreed to accept Rs 3 lakh.

In a sting operation, CBI officials laid a trap, catching private individual Karsan Ganesh Ahir red-handed while accepting Rs.1 lakh in real currency along with dummy notes on behalf of the Deputy Registrar. Subsequent investigations led to the arrest of Singh for his role in the bribery scheme.

CBI officials conducted searches at the residences and offices of the accused in Mumbai and Lucknow, further uncovering evidence related to the case. Both individuals were presented before the Competent Court in Mumbai today.

The arrests underscore CBI’s commitment to fighting corruption in India’s judicial and regulatory bodies. Investigations into the case are ongoing.
