After nearly eight years of legal proceedings, the Nuapada Additional Sessions Court delivered its final judgment on a brutal murder case that took place in Odisha’s Silva village.
The court sentenced four members of a single family to life imprisonment for the murder of Kapil Sabar (50).
The crime occurred on January 15, 2017, when Kapil Sabar was attacked while visiting a local shop in Silva village. Reports indicate that Hrushi Sabar (63), his wife Kshatri Sabar (60), their son Bhubaneswar Sabar (40), and daughter-in-law Bimala Sabar (37) engaged in a group assault, striking Kapil with wooden clubs and sharp weapons, leading to his instant death at the scene.
Following the incident, Kapil’s brother Purna Sabar filed a complaint at Lakhna Police Station, prompting an investigation and arrests of the accused family members along with another suspect, Darasingh Sabar (48). Law enforcement seized the murder weapons, and testimony from 23 witnesses supported the prosecution’s case.
On May 15, 2025, Judge Sunil Kumar Das ruled that the four family members would serve life imprisonment, along with a fine of ₹10,000 each. Due to insufficient evidence, Darasingh Sabar was acquitted.
The case has sparked discussions on village justice, mob attacks, and legal accountability. Local residents expressed relief over the court’s decision, stating that justice had finally been served after years of legal delays.
