A significant breakthrough in India-Pakistan relations unfolded today as both nations agreed to a “full and immediate ceasefire”. Former Odisha Chief Minister and Biju Janata Dal (BJD) President Naveen Patnaik welcomed the ceasefire while applauding the Indian Armed Forces for their “uncompromising stance against terrorism.”

On May 7, 2025, India launched ‘Operation Sindoor,’ a precision military strike aimed at dismantling terrorist hideouts in Pakistan and POJK. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri described the operation as “measured, non-escalatory, proportionate, and responsible,” emphasising that the strikes focused on specific buildings to avoid collateral damage. However, the operation triggered a fierce response from Pakistan, with heavy mortar shelling in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch sector killing 12 civilians, including three women and three children, and one Indian soldier, while injuring 51 others.

The Indian Armed Forces’ actions were widely supported across the political spectrum. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed solidarity with the central government, stating that her state stood “shoulder to shoulder” in the fight against terrorism. Congress MP Shashi Tharoor also welcomed the ceasefire, noting, “Peace is essential… India never wanted a long-term war. India wanted war to teach terrorists a lesson, and that lesson has been taught.”

Naveen Patnaik, a veteran politician who led Odisha for over two decades, took to X to share his thoughts. “While welcoming the #ceasefire announcement between India and Pakistan, applaud India’s uncompromising stance against terrorism,” he wrote. Indian Armed Forces have done an excellent job in dismantling terrorist hideouts and terror-supporting infrastructure in Pakistan. Congratulations to our Armed Forces. #JaiHind.” His post garnered significant attention, with users echoing patriotic sentiments like “Jai Hind” while others expressed scepticism about Pakistan’s intentions.

For now, the Indian Armed Forces remain on high alert, prepared to respond to any “misadventure” from Pakistan, as stated by military officials during the briefing on ‘Operation Sindoor.’ As the dust settles along the LoC, the international community watches closely, hoping this ceasefire marks the beginning of a more stable chapter in India-Pakistan relations.
