The University of Western Australia (UWA), a prestigious institution ranked among the top 100 globally, is set to open its first campus in India, with Mumbai as the main hub.
This move positions UWA as the first university from Australia’s elite Group of Eight to establish a physical presence in the country.
UWA has submitted a proposal to the University Grants Commission (UGC) for approval, aiming to provide Indian students with world-class education and flexible study options. The Mumbai campus will offer courses across Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM), Business, and Creative Arts, including programs from the UWA Conservatorium of Music.
Beyond Mumbai, UWA has plans for expansion in Tamil Nadu, contingent on approvals from the UGC and UWA’s governing Senate. The initiative aligns with India’s National Education Policy 2020, which fosters international collaboration in higher education.
UWA Chancellor Diane Smith-Gander highlighted the university’s long-standing partnerships with India, particularly in agriculture and business sectors. She emphasized that UWA’s presence would contribute to India’s booming education sector, expected to grow by 60% over the next decade.
Students will benefit from inter-campus transfers between Mumbai and Perth, allowing them to experience global education while studying in India. With a focus on fostering academic exchange, UWA aims to empower Indian students with international expertise and career opportunities.
The move reflects a broader trend of global institutions recognising India’s educational potential and strengthening the academic ties between Australia and India.
