A tragic industrial accident struck the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant late Sunday evening when molten iron spilled onto workers during operations, leading to the death of eight individuals and injuring several others.

The incident occurred in one of the plant’s blast furnace units, catching both employees and contract workers off guard.

Emergency teams rushed to the site, battling flames and toxic fumes while rescuing trapped workers. The injured were immediately shifted to nearby hospitals including Medicover, Seven Hills, and KIMS, where they are undergoing treatment. Four of the deceased workers’ bodies have been brought to the Steel Plant General Hospital for post-mortem procedures.

Authorities have launched a probe into the cause of the accident, with preliminary reports suggesting a technical failure in the furnace system. Safety lapses and inadequate protective measures are also being examined.

Former Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy expressed deep grief over the tragedy, extended condolences to the bereaved families, and urged officials to ensure the best possible medical care for the injured. He emphasized the need for strict safety protocols to prevent such incidents in the future.

The accident has sparked widespread concern about industrial safety standards in large-scale plants. Trade unions and worker associations have demanded accountability, calling for compensation to victims’ families and stronger enforcement of occupational safety norms.

As investigations continue, the Vizag Steel Plant tragedy stands as a grim reminder of the risks faced by industrial workers and the urgent need for robust safety mechanisms in India’s manufacturing sector.
