Veteran Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami announced his retirement from Test cricket on Friday, 6 November 2026, bringing an end to a 13-year red-ball career. The 36-year-old pacer confirmed through an emotional social media statement that while he is stepping away from the longest format, he will remain available for white-ball cricket, domestic matches, and the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Shami retires as India’s sixth most successful fast bowler in Test history, having taken 229 wickets in 64 matches at an average of 27.71, including six five-wicket hauls.
A Milestone Journey Marked by Speed and Reverse Swing
The announcement came exactly 13 years after Shami made his Test debut against the West Indies at Eden Gardens on 6 November 2013, where he produced a stellar match haul of 9 for 118.
- Elite Pacing Legacy: Renowned for his upright seam position and mastery of reverse swing, Shami formed a lethal overseas pace unit alongside Jasprit Bumrah and Ishan Sharma.
- Overseas Excellence: Four of Shami’s six five-wicket hauls came in SENA countries (South Africa, England, New Zealand, Australia), including crucial spells in Johannesburg (5/28 in 2018) and Centurion.
- Final Appearance: Shami’s last Test appearance for India was during the World Test Championship final against Australia at The Oval in June 2023.
Focus Shifts to White-Ball Formats & Domestic Action
Shami assured fans that his international white-ball journey and domestic participation remain active:
- Domestic Commitment: Shami took 14 wickets in three Ranji Trophy matches for Bengal this season and has been named in Bengal’s squad for the upcoming Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy beginning on 14 November.
- White-Ball Availability: Shami remains in contention for national selection in Limited Overs Internationals (LOIs) and will continue playing in the IPL.
