A 31-year-old police officer attached to the Special Operations Group (SOG) has been arrested by Nayapalli police in Bhubaneswar on charges of establishing physical relations with a 23-year-old woman under the false promise of marriage.
According to the complaint, the incident took place on October 28 at a lodge in the Nayapalli police station area. The woman alleged that the accused, after giving her a false assurance of marriage, had sexual intercourse with her. Based on her statement, Nayapalli police registered a case under Section 69 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which deals with sexual intercourse by employing deceitful means, including a false promise of marriage.
During the investigation, the accused was identified as a serving SOG personnel and a resident of Jajpur district. He was arrested and produced before the court. Police said the investigation is continuing and necessary evidence is being collected. The department has taken a serious view of the matter.
The case highlights the application of the new BNS provision that specifically criminalises sexual intercourse obtained through a false promise of marriage when the act does not amount to rape under other sections.
