Italian prodigy Andrea Kimi Antonelli made Formula 1 history on Sunday, November 1, 2026, becoming the youngest World Drivers’ Champion in the sport’s history at just 20 years of age.
Despite finishing third at the Mexico City Grand Prix behind race winner Max Verstappen and second-placed Lewis Hamilton, the Mercedes driver secured an unassailable points lead in the drivers’ championship with four races remaining in the 2026 season.
Record-Breaking Title Victory
Antonelli’s championship victory breaks the previous record set by Sebastian Vettel, who won his first world title in 2010 at age 23.
The achievement also makes Antonelli the first Italian driver to claim the Formula 1 World Championship since Alberto Ascari in 1953, ending a 73-year drought for Italy.
An emotional Antonelli expressed his gratitude over the team radio immediately after crossing the finish line:
”Thank you so much, we did it, we did it, thank you so much… thank you. I would not be here without Mercedes and my family. I am speechless just trying to process this. It has been an incredible season.”
Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali lauded the historic achievement, stating:
”For 73 years, our country has waited for this moment, and today an entire nation will celebrate one of its own reaching the very pinnacle of our sport. Today, his name joins the legends of our sport.”
Mexico City GP Highlights & Track Incidents
While Red Bull’s Max Verstappen claimed his sixth career victory at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez, the race was packed with dramatic incidents across the grid:
The race was red-flagged on lap 46 following a high-speed crash by Cadillac’s Valtteri Bottas caused by a right-side suspension failure at Turn 1. Bottas exited the car unassisted and was taken for precautionary medical evaluation.
Tensions flared between Ferrari teammates Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc. Hamilton, who started on pole, lost the lead to Leclerc on lap 4 after going off-track. Although stewards handed Leclerc a 5-second penalty, Hamilton expressed frustration over team radio regarding race strategy and car management under clean-air conditions.
Aston Martin suffered a disastrous weekend, with both Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll retiring early due to recurring engine reliability issues.
Remaining Season Outlook
With Antonelli establishing an uncatchable lead over teammate George Russell and Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton, the 2026 F1 calendar next moves to the Brazilian Grand Prix in São Paulo, followed by Las Vegas.
