The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) has strongly condemned the State Bank of India (SBI) following a massive data breach and mounting allegations of corruption among bank employees in Odisha.
A recent leak on the dark web has compromised the personal data of nearly 3,897 SBI customers, exposing sensitive information such as mobile numbers, addresses, email IDs, dates of birth, CIF IDs, and loan details.
In a press statement, BJD Media Coordinator Dr. Lenin Mohanty expressed grave concern over the breach, highlighting that thousands of customers are now highly vulnerable to financial fraud. He heavily criticized the country’s largest public sector bank for failing to detect the cyber breach internally.
Beyond digital security failures, Dr. Mohanty pointed to systemic corruption at the grassroots level. He noted that widespread reports across Odisha allege that SBI employees are actively demanding bribes for basic services, including cash withdrawals, loan processing, and insurance claim disbursements.
“The negligence of a public sector bank towards its customers is condemnable,” stated Dr. Mohanty, emphasizing that institutions built on public trust cannot allow such lapses.
The BJD has demanded a comprehensive, transparent investigation into the dark web leak and urged SBI to publicly release the list of affected customers. Furthermore, the party called for immediate and strict disciplinary action against corrupt officials in Odisha to restore public confidence and ensure a secure, corruption-free banking environment.
