Actor Pankaj Tripathi says the massive theatrical success of Mirzapur: The Movie and Hanuman Ansh has shattered industry misconceptions that actors not traditionally known for massive opening numbers cannot pull crowds to cinemas.
Speaking on day two of the Jagran Film Festival, the 50-year-old actor addressed how trade experts often push fixed narratives, whereas moviegoers prove that engaging storytelling wins.
The big-screen continuation of Mirzapur grossed Rs 229.60 crore nett in India following its Sept release, driven by audience familiarity with iconic characters like Kaleen Bhaiya, Guddu Pandit, and Munna. “The audience has relatability with the characters of Mirzapur… People liked that world,” Tripathi noted, adding that an extended cut will feature on its upcoming OTT release.
Reflecting on his portrayal of Akhandanand “Kaleen Bhaiya”, Tripathi highlighted avoiding conventional, loud antagonist tropes in favour of natural, subtle mannerisms.
Known for acclaimed performances in films like Masaan and Newton, the Bihar-born actor shared that his motivation has evolved. While early career decisions were driven by financial survival, he now prioritises script quality, choosing to take on fewer projects that genuinely challenge him.
“I just want to spend my life doing this and earn enough to make a living… whatever has happened beyond this is surplus,” Tripathi added.
