The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) launched nationwide protests on Monday at party headquarters across all states, demanding the immediate resignation of Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge following his “indecent and offensive” remarks targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The controversy erupted after Kharge, speaking at an event in Patna, retorted with “Modi ka baap bhi jayega” when an audience member claimed the Prime Minister would not go anywhere.
The BJP responded with widespread agitation, burning effigies and posters of Kharge in major cities including Patna, Jammu, Delhi, and Bengaluru.
Senior BJP leaders sharply condemned the comments. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh expressed deep hurt over the remarks made about PM Modi’s late father, stating it was distressing that such language originated from the chief of India’s oldest political party.
Union Minister Pralhad Joshi further accused the Congress leadership of political immaturity and ruining the nation’s decorum.
The Congress party and its allies hit back, accusing the BJP of selective outrage. Karnataka Minister Priyank Kharge argued that the ruling party was making issues out of non-issues, while RJD MP Manoj Jha questioned why similar outrage was absent when BJP leaders made offensive comments about Sonia Gandhi and Kharge in the past.
