In a stellar display of modern policing, scientific acumen, and inter-state coordination, the Commissionerate Police has successfully solved the high-profile blind murder case of an unidentified woman whose body was recovered from the Kathajodi riverbank near Raja Bagicha on October 7, 2026.
The investigation, registered under Badambadi PS Case No. 505 under Section 103(1) of the BNS, initially faced immense hurdles. The victim’s body was severely disfigured, leaving investigators with virtually no immediate physical markers for identification.
From a Simple Tattoo to a Breakthrough
Faced with a blank slate, the investigating team turned to meticulous forensic examination alongside the DFSL unit. Scrutinising the victim’s remains, detectives spotted a crucial piece of physical evidence: a distinctive tattoo bearing the words “Abinash–Gauri”, accompanied by a small nose pin and unique facial characteristics.
Leveraging this clue, the team launched a targeted social media sweep. Searching the names on Facebook led them to a profile belonging to Abinash Sahu in the Narla area of Kalahandi district. Quick coordination with local police units and further photo verifications confirmed a matching tattoo, ultimately unmasking the deceased as Gauri Bhoi of Kalahandi.
A Complex Interstate Manhunt
With the victim’s identity established, the case shifted into a high-stakes manhunt. The prime suspect had gone into hiding, frequently changing locations and employing multiple aliases, including Jalandhar Bag, Rabi Majhi, and Krishna.
The Commissionerate Police deployed specialised teams across state borders. While one team conducted exhaustive ground inquiries in the Komana PS area of Nuapada district, another tracked digital and physical footprints to Kamareddy district in Telangana. Backed by the Cyber Cell of Kataka UPD—which meticulously combed through ERSS call logs, hospital documents, and CCTV footage spanning Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, and Bibbipet—investigators slowly closed the net.
The Apprehension
Sustained intelligence gathering finally bore fruit when actionable inputs placed the suspect in Putur, located within Andhra Pradesh’s Tirupati district. Moving swiftly, an elite investigative team rushed to the location and, working hand-in-hand with local law enforcement, successfully apprehended the accused.
This breakthrough highlights the vital role that digital intelligence, forensic science, and seamless multi-state police collaboration play in bringing perpetrators of heinous crimes to justice. Further legal proceedings and investigations are currently underway.
