Celebrating the confluence of Odisha’s rich cultural heritage and its aspirations for modern, sustainable cities, renowned sand artist Sudarsan Pattnaik has created a special sand art installation to mark the hosting of the 19th Urban Mobility India (UMI) Conference & Exhibition and the 2nd National Urban Conclave (NUC) 2026 in Bhubaneswar from October 23 to 25.
The inaugural session of the two national events was graced by Shri Tokhan Sahu and Dr. Krushna Chandra Mahapatra, setting the stage for deliberations on sustainable urban mobility, inclusive development and the creation of accessible and liveable cities. Both Ministers also visited the sand art installation, appreciating its creative portrayal of Odisha’s cultural heritage and its aspirations for urban transformation.
Bearing the message “Legacy in Motion, Cities in Transition,” Pattnaik’s installation presents a striking visual narrative of Odisha’s journey towards a connected and sustainable urban future. Bringing together the architectural splendour of Odisha’s temples, the iconic Konark Wheel and a contemporary cityscape, the artwork symbolises the harmonious relationship between the State’s glorious past and its aspirations for urban transformation.
The installation conveys a powerful message that progress and modernisation can go hand in hand with the preservation of cultural identity and heritage. It reflects the vision of cities that embrace innovation, improved connectivity and environmental sustainability while remaining rooted in their history and traditions.
Featuring “OdishaOnTheMove, UMI2026 and NUC2026”, the sand art offers a creative welcome to delegates and visitors from across the country, showcasing Odisha’s artistic excellence alongside its commitment to progressive urban development.
The hosting of UMI and NUC 2026 provides an important national platform for policymakers, urban planners, mobility experts and other stakeholders to exchange knowledge, share best practices and explore innovative solutions to emerging urban challenges. The events also offer Odisha an opportunity to showcase its heritage, hospitality and vision for building cities that are more connected, inclusive, sustainable and citizen-friendly.
Through this unique blend of art, heritage and contemporary aspirations, Sudarsan Pattnaik’s creation captures the essence of the two events—honouring Odisha’s enduring legacy while celebrating its journey towards the cities of tomorrow.
