Emphasizing an integrated approach to unlocking the state’s massive potential, Odisha Governor Braj Mohan Ram has issued a strong call to elevate Odisha’s tourist destinations onto the national and international stage.
Speaking at the valedictory ceremony of the 7th Odisha Tourism Conclave in Bhubaneswar on Friday, the Governor highlighted the pressing need for robust infrastructure development, fresh investment opportunities, and ensuring that the economic benefits of tourism reach the state’s most remote areas.
Every District a Tourist Hub
The Governor noted that every single district in Odisha holds its own unique tourism potential—boasting natural wealth, historical monuments, and a deeply rooted cultural heritage. He stressed that these diverse assets must be systematically identified and strategically promoted globally.
Congratulating the Hotel and Restaurant Association of Odisha (HRAO) and the event organizers for successfully bringing together the government, industry leaders, and investors, he expressed optimism that such collaborative platforms will translate Odisha’s tourism potential into concrete policies and actionable plans.
An Engine for Economic and Cultural Growth
Describing tourism as a primary catalyst for economic growth, employment, and entrepreneurship, the Governor explained its ripple effect across allied sectors like hospitality, transportation, handicrafts, local cuisine, agriculture, and small-scale businesses. He emphasized that tourism must not only create livelihoods for local communities but also safeguard their cultural identity and traditions.
Drawing attention to the state’s unmatched diversity, he spoke of the spiritual pull of the holy shrine of Lord Jagannath, the architectural marvel of the Konark Sun Temple, the ancient temples of Bhubaneswar, and the serene Chilika Lake. He also underscored the value of Odisha’s pristine coastline, Buddhist heritage, vibrant tribal traditions, and rich wildlife.
The Roadmap Ahead: Infrastructure and Sustainability
To transform Odisha into a premier global travel destination, the Governor outlined several critical requirements: seamless connectivity, high-quality accommodations, modern amenities, skilled manpower, and aggressive digital promotion. He further highlighted the immense scope for specialized travel sectors, including Eco-tourism, Spiritual tourism, Adventure tourism, and MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) tourism.
Crucially, the Governor advocated for a delicate balance between tourism expansion and environmental conservation. Promoting responsible tourism, he noted, will create fresh opportunities for the youth, bolster the local economy, and give Odisha’s rich heritage the global recognition it deserves—ultimately contributing to the vision of a “Viksit Odisha” (Developed Odisha) and “Viksit Bharat” (Developed India).
The high-profile event was also graced by several distinguished speakers, including Bhubaneswar MP Aparajita Sarangi, Consul General of India in Auckland Dr. Madan Mohan Sethi, and former Chief Secretary of Odisha Gokul Chandra Pati. Dr. J.K. Mohanty, Chairman of the Hotel and Restaurant Association of Odisha, delivered the welcome address.
