Indian Railways has shattered all previous benchmarks by registering an unprecedented all-time high in coal loading.
According to official data released by the Press Information Bureau, coal loading witnessed a staggering 22.5% growth between October 1 and October 18, 2026, compared to the same period last year.
This remarkable feat translates to an additional 87 coal rakes dispatched per day over October 2025, ensuring that thermal power plants across the country remain adequately stocked amid surging seasonal demand.
Sustained Growth Throughout FY 2026-27
The record-breaking performance in October is not an isolated success but part of a sustained upward trajectory. During the first half (H1) of the 2026-27 financial year, Indian Railways maintained a steady pace, dispatching an average of 430 coal rakes per day directly to thermal power stations—a robust 7.1% increase over the corresponding period in the previous fiscal year.
The momentum was equally prominent in September 2026, which recorded a 14% daily increase in rake dispatches compared to September 2025.
Meeting the Nation’s Rising Energy Demands
The aggressive push in coal transportation comes at a crucial time. Driven by expanding industrial production and deficient rainfall in specific regions, India has experienced a sharp spike in energy consumption and electricity demand.
To prevent supply bottlenecks, Indian Railways has maintained seamless synergy with the Ministry of Coal and the Ministry of Power. This inter-ministerial coordination has streamlined coal evacuation from mining hubs to power generation units, successfully maintaining healthy coal inventories nationwide and averting potential energy shortages.
As India’s economic engines continue to accelerate, Indian Railways’ record-breaking logistics performance stands as a testament to its pivotal role in keeping the lights on and powering the nation’s progress.
