A high-stakes political showdown is brewing as prominent economist and author Parakala Prabhakar—husband of Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman—prepares to share the stage with Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) founder Abhijeet Dipke and actor-activist Prakash Raj.

The leaders are uniting for a major nationwide mobilisation on October 23, 2026, organised under the banner of the People Against SIR alliance.

The protest alliance is pressing forward with two principal demands:

  • The total scrapping of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, which critics argue has led to the systemic deletion of roughly 13 crore voters, particularly targeting marginalised communities.

  • The immediate resignation of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar, following controversies surrounding internal dissent handling within the Election Commission.

A Call for Decentralized Resistance

With the Delhi Police having recently denotified central Delhi’s traditional Jantar Mantar site, the alliance has given a fresh clarion call for decentralised mobilisation. Under the powerful slogan, “Har haath mein Tiranga, Har gali mein Jantar Mantar” (The Tricolour in every hand, a Jantar Mantar in every street), citizens across the country are being urged to set up local protest nodes in their respective neighbourhoods.

Prabhakar, who has emerged as a vocal critic of the ruling administration’s economic and democratic policies—and author of The Crooked Timber of New India—tweeted a rallying cry: “Har gali me Jantar Mantar! Friday, October 23, 2026. People’s march to restore democracy. Let’s rise to the challenge.”

Star-Studded Coalition

The October 23 demonstrations will feature a diverse lineup of prominent figures, including:

  • Senior advocate Prashant Bhushan

  • Farmer leader Rakesh Tikait

  • AISA president Neha Bora

  • Author and activist Tushar Gandhi

While organisers have formally invited INDIA bloc parties to lend political weight to the movement, official confirmation from major opposition parties remains pending.
