The investigation into the sensational rescue of five infant orangutans from a forest in the Bhograi area of Balasore district has taken a major international turn.

The Special Task Force (STF) of the Odisha Crime Branch is gearing up to visit Indonesia as part of an intensified effort to crack down on a cross-border wildlife smuggling syndicate.

According to official sources, the STF decided to expand its probe globally after gathering concrete primary evidence during initial interrogations and surveillance. Since orangutans are not native to India and their natural habitats are restricted to the tropical rainforests of Indonesia and Malaysia, investigators believe that tracing the root of the smuggling network requires direct on-ground intelligence gathering in Indonesia.

The upcoming visit will involve close coordination with local administration, forestry departments, and international conservation agencies in Indonesia. The primary focus of the STF team will be to map out the trafficking routes, identify key handlers, and dismantle the international syndicate responsible for smuggling the infant apes into India. Initial findings strongly suggest that the rescued primates are victims of a sophisticated global wildlife trafficking racket.

Prior to this international development, the probe was largely concentrated along the West Bengal border, analysing CCTV footage, vehicle movements, and local associates. With the decision to send a team to Indonesia, the investigation has scaled up significantly. Preparations for the delegation’s overseas journey are currently underway, and they are expected to depart soon.

Meanwhile, the five rescued baby orangutans are safely housed at the Nandankanan Zoological Park, where expert veterinarians are closely monitoring their health and well-being. Law enforcement officials remain optimistic that this cross-border collaboration will help unearth the masterminds behind the illegal trade.
