In a major push toward urban rejuvenation and public-space enhancement, the Housing & Urban Development Department, Government of Odisha, has approved the bidding outcomes for the ambitious Integrated Development of Mahanadi Waterfront at Kataka project.

Executed on an Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contract model, the project entails an outlay of ₹133,71,97,015 (excluding GST). The development aims to transform Kataka’s historical riverfront into a vibrant, ecologically balanced, and universally accessible public realm.

Key Infrastructure & Recreational Components

The comprehensive redevelopment plan integrates modern civic infrastructure with leisure and cultural spaces:

  • Riverfront Promenades & Landscaping: Construction of extensive walking promenades, non-motorized mobility networks, and environmental enhancement zones.
  • Cultural Highlights: Development of Kataka Haat, an Anchor Pavilion, and a dedicated Open-Air Theatre for public gatherings and cultural events.
  • Ecological Rejuvenation: Restructuring and rejuvenation of surrounding waterbodies alongside landscaped gardens.
  • Civic Amenities: Creation of public pathways, parking facilities, integrated lighting, and surveillance systems.

Execution Timeline and Sustainability Directives

All developmental works will adhere strictly to applicable statutory provisions, environmental safeguards, and directions issued by the National Green Tribunal (NGT).

  • Construction Schedule: On-ground construction is slated to commence in November 2026 with a completion timeline set for November 2028 (24-month construction period).
  • Operation & Maintenance: Following construction, the selected agency will execute a comprehensive five-year Operation & Maintenance (O&M) contract to ensure long-term sustainability and upkeep.
