Abhishek Sharma Rewrites T20I History with Fastest 2,000 Runs

Abhishek Sharma 2000 T20I runs

In a blistering display that has become his signature, Abhishek Sharma etched his name into T20I record books on Sunday at Holkar Stadium in Indore.

The left-handed opener reached the landmark of 2,000 runs in men’s T20 Internationals in just 1,024 deliveries, shattering Suryakumar Yadav’s previous world record of 1,164 balls

He crossed the milestone with his 33rd run of the innings in the third T20I against West Indies, becoming only the sixth Indian to achieve the feat after Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul. Playing his 65th T20I, the 26-year-old from Amritsar once again demonstrated why he is widely regarded as one of the most destructive openers in world cricket.

Abhishek’s numbers already read like those of a seasoned veteran. He has three centuries and 14 fifties in the format, backed by a strike rate consistently north of 195. Half-centuries often arrive at breakneck speed — including an 18-ball fifty in the 2026 T20 World Cup final against New Zealand and several other rapid knocks. Just last month against Afghanistan, he produced the fastest T20I century by a batter from a Full Member nation, racing to three figures in 30 balls en route to 108 off 34.

On Sunday, he continued the carnage. Live updates from Indore showed him racing to 54 off just 19 balls (five fours, four sixes) as India launched an aggressive total. The innings that brought up the 2,000-run mark was typical Abhishek: clean striking, fearless intent and an ability to clear the ropes that has already produced more than 135 sixes in T20Is.

The record for fewest balls to 2,000 T20I runs now stands as:

  1. Abhishek Sharma (India) – 1,024
  2. Suryakumar Yadav (India) – 1,164
  3. Aaron Finch (Australia) – 1,283
  4. Glenn Maxwell (Australia) – 1,304
  5. Hardik Pandya (India) – 1,390
  6. Tim Seifert (New Zealand) – 1,395

What makes the achievement even more striking is the age and the timeframe. Abhishek only made his T20I debut in July 2024 against Zimbabwe. In a little over two years, he has gone from promising domestic talent (and Sunrisers Hyderabad star) to a central figure in India’s white-ball plans, contributing to the 2026 T20 World Cup triumph and consistently delivering high-impact starts.

His boundary percentage is routinely among the highest in the game, and bowlers across the world have struggled to contain him in the powerplay. While his average sits in the early 30s, the sheer scoring rate and ability to change the complexion of a match in a handful of overs have made him indispensable.

With the series against West Indies still alive and more international cricket on the horizon, Abhishek shows no signs of slowing down. At 26, he has already joined India’s most exclusive T20I batting company — and done so faster than anyone else in history. The “monster” tag fans have given him feels increasingly accurate.
